Create another layer, convert it to a Smart Object and relink to the PSD of the surrounding block (here: stone). Copy this layer until you fill all surrounding blocks. Here you can see if the block looks good with other blocks. You can use the last two files for every texture by simply relinking the layers to other textures. The texture updates in those two files every time you save it (I generally recommend you to save your files frequently, because Photoshop likes to crash sometimes. Ctrl + S will save your efforts one day). Those sorts of recommendations are frowned upon in most places, and personally I've largely put that sort of thing behind me (not that I'll judge someone based on their software usage). I transitioned to using GIMP so I could use Linux, rather than being stuck on PS. I used it for the majority of texture work on my resource pack, which admittedly was just a barely passable pixel art pack. Unfortunately by the time I had started using Krita, I wasn't really working on my pack that much (not that I could really utilize the capabilities of Krita's brush engine for pixel art) and was disinterested in Minecraft (1.9 breaking my models was the final straw). It might not be the best replacement for your specific case (especially with filter workflow and such), but Krita is capable of creating good art easily. Its specialty is painting, but you can still do pixel art+photo editing with it.Īlso as I said to someone else in this thread:Īside from features (like canvas rotation, multibrush for mirroring/symmetry, brush stabilization) it's just generally easier to use than GIMP's workflow. Krita doesn't bother with floating layers like GIMP does.

Krita can move the pixels of a selection and pastes are done as new layers. I'm not saying that overall it's better than PS (I do think Krita does a few things better, wrap being one of them), but I'd say it genuinely is the closest free alternative.
